It’s all about going back to nature.
One of the most enriching activities I have experienced in Bali is Green Village Tour. The tour takes you to three destinations – Green Village, Bamboo Factory and Green School – with about an hour dedicated to each location. Green Village is a community of unconventional homes clustered along the slopes of Bali’s beautiful Ayung River.
There are spectacular houses constructed entirely by hand from locally sourced bamboo, including Palm House, Sunrise House and Temple House. Sharma Springs is by far my favourite, this six-storey bamboo house being the latest addition to Green Village. The main entrance is an enormous bamboo tube accessing the fourth floor, where the lounge and kitchen are situated. The lowest level connects to a private garden and pool. It also has four double bedrooms, lounge and dining area with fabulous views, an office/work area on the highest level, a media room, a kids’ playroom and an outside barbecue area. All the rooms are decorated with bamboo furniture, perfectly complementing the house. This rent-able house also includes a butler and ADSL wi-fi.
Bamboo Factory is where I learn about the whole bamboo process, from plantation to workshop right through to design. There are also workshop classes on Model Making, House Building, Coconut Treasures and Joinery Techniques. The last part of the tour explore the imaginative campus of Green School, with its 50-plus bamboo structures, surrounded by forest and rice fields. You can learn about their use of alternative energy sources and their focus on creativity and culture. Green Village Tour is truly an eye-opening experience.
