Kungkungan Bay Resort

Kungkungan Bay Resort on the Lembeh Strait plays host to a cornucopia of weird and wonderful creatures to be found here and here alone – as a result is simply a mecca for divers.

Kungkungan Bay Resort is a small, exclusive resort tucked against a coral-filled bay on the Lembeh Strait. Located on the eastern side of the peninsula, the view from the guest accommodations encompasses rugged Lembeh Island and the smaller Serena Island. The resort is built in a style that matches traditional Sulawesi architecture and has 1,200 feet of private beach and is surrounded by tropical rainforest. It is a relaxed place, and the reefs here are pristine and little explored. Kungkungan Bay Resort also is the first international dive resort to open the doors in North Sulawesi and it was the first resort in the dive industry to use “Muck Diving” as the main diving attraction.

Kungkungan Bay Resort is built on the site of an old coconut plantation, on the quiet side of North Sulawesi. Because it sits right on the water, the resort is almost always blessed by a cooling breeze, and diving conditions are good all year round. The octagon-shaped, over the water, main building has become an icon in North Sulawesi and is home to the resort lobby, the main dining room and Capt. Billy’s Bar. Here you can literally dine over the coral reef and colourful reef fish of the bay, all the while enjoying the great views of the strait and the surrounding tropical islands.

Kungkungan Bay Resort is a mecca for underwater photographers and fish watchers. Rising almost to the surface, rock pinnacles are lush with soft corals and swirling with jacks and massive vertical schools of barracuda and the area is unusually rich in rare species, such as seahorses and octopus. The bowl of an old lava flow, ringed by jagged black rock, is crowded with delicate coral and the rare, jewel-like mandarin fish. A newly discovered wreck is exquisitely encrusted and alive with fish, octopus, and colourful invertebrates, and an inshore reef, beginning in just inches of water in front of the resort, is filled with a wide range of soft and hard corals, fish and colourful invertebrates.

Kungkungan Bay Resort is the only sea level luxury resort in the Lembeh Strait, and 16 of the 17 rooms are waterfront, providing an easy stroll back to your room between dives. The resort has eight deluxe, beachfront cottages and eight deluxe beachfront traditional houses and all of the rooms are colourfully decorated with a local flare, situated steps from the black-sand beach, and offer excellent views of the strait and the island of Lembeh.

Enjoy Lembeh’s only waterfront infinity pool, with beautiful views of the Lembeh Strait with all of its local colour as well as a convenient swim-up bar. Diving isn’t all that is on offer and there is the opportunity to see amazing wildlife, beautiful scenery, at the nearby volcanoes, hot spring bath houses, and the photogenic rice paddies of Tondano or the nearby Tangkoko-Batuangus-Dua Suadara Reserve. These activities will make your experience truly unforgettable.
